Sinj is known as a place of pilgrimage. In 1715. the local population, far outnumbered by Ottoman invaders still managed to beat them. They believed that Lady Madonna had answered their prayers. The picture of Madonna has survived wars, fires, earthquakes and several transfers. It is believed to be miraculous. Every year on Feast of Assumption (Aug 15) Christians from all over the country pilgrimage to Sinj. Many go on foot and even barefoot.
That’s also how Alka, the annual knights’ tournament began. In honor of this miraculous event, this tournament takes place every first weekend in August. It is the oldest continually held tournament of its kind. The first one was held in 1717. and in 2010 it was included in the list of UNESCO intangible heritage.
All being said, it is not surprising that Sinj has a hippodrome (one of the largest in the country) and many private stud farms. Let me know if you wish to go horse riding – because this is just the place!
