Cetina river in Sinj Croatia

Sinj is known as a place of pilgrimage. In 1715. the local population, far outnumbered by Ottoman invaders still managed to defend their homes. They believed that Lady Madonna had answered their prayers. The picture of Madonna has survived many transfers, wars, fires and earthquakes. It is believed to be miraculous. Every year on August 15 (the Feast of Assumption) Christians from all over the country pilgrimage to Sinj. Many go barefoot.

That’s how Alka, the annual knights’ tournament began. In honor of this miraculous event, this tournament takes place every first weekend in August. The first one was held in 1717 and in 2010 it was included in the list of UNESCO intangible heritage. The Alka Museum is one of a kind and it’s a must when in Sinj!

All being said, it is not surprising that Sinj has a hippodrome (one of the largest in the country) and many private stud farms. Let me know if you wish to go horse riding – because this is just the place!
